Arcadia Support Portal :: I keep a Green iguana, what lamp should I choose?

I keep a Green iguana, what lamp should I choose?

A. The type and percentage of lamp required can only be worked out by using the wild UV index in conjunction with then limitation of the lamp and the height of the enclosure. The higher the enclosure the more powerful the lamp! It is now known that the Green iguana has developed a very good internal protection from long periods basking in the powerful wild sun. These are a highly arboreal and diurnal species of lizard that nature has adapted too life in a high UV index environment. In fact the tail of the green iguana is almost totally protected. This would be the part of the animal that would be hanging down in the trees and more likely to be exposed for long periods of time.

So does the green iguana need less UV? 100% no it would require large amounts of quality UV in captivity. We must provide enough exposure so that the built in defence is not simply stopping the require amount getting into the plasma. See www.uvguide.co.uk for the skin test results. So when fitting in medium to large enclosures that maybe 4-6+ feet high we need to get as much power and UV energy into the enclosure as safely possible. So how do we work out what lamp is require.

In almost all cases the high output T5 system is required for captive Iguanas. Using the T5s enables you to provide a good UV photogradient for the animal that has enough power to for the Iguana to use. But what % lamp D3 6% or D3+ 12%?  let’s say that a D3 6% high output T5 lamp is providing 289mws2 at 10cms the D3+ 12% would emit roughly the same amount of UV at 20cms. That is a doubling of UV reach so the extra power is providing the power the animal requires at a further distance. So using the T5 D3+ and reflector would enable you to achieve the magic 100mws2 at 40-45cms from the lamp.
