Arcadia Support Portal :: I have an albino lizard is it safe to use artificial lighting?

I have an albino lizard is it safe to use artificial lighting?

A. The popularity of colour morphs is quite easy to see. The varying colours and sizes of captive bred animals has never been greater. Most of these morphs have used the albino gene to produce some of these wonderful colours. This is manifest usually with pink eyed animals. Any animal that has pink or red eyes will be LIGHT sensitive. This does not reduce their biological need to obtain energy from heat or D3 from UVB. The higher the morph the more sensitive the eyes will be. For example the enigma morph of the leopard gecko is so sensitive to light that it is usually kept in total darkness.

At Arcadia we passionately believe that “if an animal would or could have access to natural sunlight in the wild it can only be useful if provided in the correct way in captivity”. We believe that the leopard gecko for example is a fully acclimated desert dwelling animal that would use UVA and UVB in the wild. The old fashioned thought that they are totally nocturnal is now disproved. So how do we provide light correctly? Reptiles are the lighting experts, if you provide enough hides and vivarium decoration the animal will move around the enclosure and photoregulate naturally. We advise using a lower % of UVB for high albino morphs fitted to around half the enclosure. This will then provide good light and essential shade. If any captive albino animal shows visible signs of distress usually shown as twirling of the head you may need to remove all light sources.
