I want to get a Dwarf Crocodile what is the best method of lighting him?

A. Crocs are very tricky to illuminate properly. Firstly they spend long periods in water which will cut some of the available UV energy. Secondly they have a very thick armour plate which is designed to withstand long periods of day time basking in full sunlight in some of the highest UV index zones of the world. We need to provide a good amount of energy to bypass some of these limitations. This coupled with a D3 rich diet should be acceptable.

At Arcadia we passionately believe that “if there is any way whatsoever no matter how small that an animal would or could have exposure to natural light in the wild it can only be of use if provided in the correct way in captivity”(jcs2011).  Even if the provision of this lighting is just to provide normal tetrachromatic vision through the use of UVA. The provision of UVB will have a positive effect on the animal in question by topping up any under provision of D3 plus all of the other benefits of exposure to UVB that may have a positive effect on reptiles. We suggest that D3+ 12% high output T5 lamps and reflectors are used in combination with a powerful UVB spot like the Arcadia 160watt D3 basking lamp. These lamps must be fitted away from the splash zone and away from “jumpers”. Situated inline in a dry basking area is always a good idea.

There are some very powerful Mercury vapour lamps available to the zoo trade that maybe useful for very large enclosures with large crocs. It must be said that lamps can never really replace natural sunlight. It is always advisable where safe to do so to allow natural basking when the index and temperature is high enough.
